We’ve Stayed Here – Mountain House

mountainhouse_blueview We just got back from a great stay at Blue Mountain House near Collingwood. Located minutes from the ski lifts, the chalet is wonderfully located for a winter stay with a group of family or friends.

There were eight of us for a weekend at Mountain House and the accommodation was more than enough with six bedrooms, four of which have queen beds, and two each with 2 sets of twin bunks – just great for the kids. 2 of the bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms.

It’s an upside down property with the bedrooms on the two lower floors and stairs up to a large open-plan living space with kitchen/dining and living areas. Windows across the front give outstanding views onto the Blue Mountain ski hill, and when it is lit up at night, is just beautiful.

The kitchen is outstanding with lots of small appliances including a George Foreman grill and slow cooker. There are plenty of large pots and pans which were great for cooking chili for 8 hungry folks following a long day on the slopes.

we have stayed here button We relaxed inside with the foosball table and played countless games of air hockey; those who needed to were able to keep up with work with the free hi-speed internet. There are TVs in the upper living space and in some of the bedrooms.

We made the most of all the activities on offer at Blue Mountain. Two of the group took a ski lesson while the experts enjoyed the more challenging runs. Several went back for night skiing and had a great time. The Village at Blue Mountain is a vibrant place to be at any time, but as dusk fell, the lights came on and snow began to fall. We sat around the fire pit in the village centre with mugs of hot chocolate and it was truly magical.

Between us, over the weekend, we went cross country skiing, snow shoeing and caving at Scenic Caves, and took in the delights of the Scandinavie Spa. We also decided it would be a great place to come in summer when the cross country and snowshoe trails become hiking and biking trails and the green of the golf course and the mountain side predominates. Northwinds Beach is just a few minutes by car so those who want sand between their toes won’t be disappointed either.

We would highly recommend Mountain House as a vacation destination at any time of the year so check the full listing make your booking now.

Experience a Cottage Country Winter Fest

winter_husky Here’s a few winter festivals to warm up some ideas for a winter break in this cold, cold weather.  How about watching world class dog sledding at the Marmora Sno-fest from January 30th – February 1st.  Stay at Osprey Cottage on nearby Crowe River or Mapleview which is around 40 minutes to the east.

The Kearney Dog Sled races are on the following weekend 6th, 7th & 8th February. Come out for a weekend of fun and see the Jamaica Dog Sled Team! Take a break in Antler’s Rest or Twin Lakes or Skyhills House on Lake Vernon.

If you’d prefer to get involved and experience dog sledding rather than just watching, then book an intro, half day or full day tour with Haliburton Forest Dog Sled team. Stay in Emilie’s Zos for comfortable cottage accommodation near to the forest.

There’s plenty of ideas for winter fun on our winter activities page. Check it out and book today.

Had Enough of Dirty Snow Yet?

snowshoes_sm  I’m a country girl. The sort that considers more than 3 cars in a line up at the Havelock intersection, to be rush hour. I’m not bothered that we don’t have gourmet restaurants and we just have one Tim Horton’s in town (which only opened last year), nor do I care that I have a 40 minute drive to get to the nearest big box store. Why don’t I care? Because we have benefits in cottage country. Big benefits! And at this time of year, the biggest one is CLEAN SNOW!

I look out my window each morning to a winter wonderland, where the only impressions made on the white stuff were by the deer that wandered through the yard in the night.  But today I’m going out to make some bigger impressions. And I’ll be wearing a pair of snow shoes.

Carl Heilmann is a snowshoe enthusiast who lives in the Adirondacks. Here’s his wonderfully evocative description of a day out snowshoeing:

The day was full of wonderment. The air was brisk and invigorating and the sky was an almost electric blue color. The low slanting rays of the winter sun sharply outlined each twig on the trees and silhouetted the snow dusted branches over the shadows of the mountains.

If you have never done this, you’re missing out on one of winter’s greatest activities, and as Carl Heilman says, "If you can walk, you can snowshoe".

cherry_hollow_ext_snow3 The owners of one of our favourite cottages, Cherry Hollow, have made sure that anyone who wants to give this a try, has the opportunity. There’s several pairs of snowshoes in different sizes available for their guests’ use. Strap them on and take a walk on the lake or into the surrounding woodland. Or, if you prefer marked trails, Arrowhead Provincial Park is close by.

osprey_ext_winter2 If you want to head out to the Kawartha region, stop off at Wild Rock Outfitters in Peterborough and rent your snowshoes for the weekend. Carry on to Osprey Cottage to the east and you can spend hours enjoying fabulous winter scenery, coming back to the cottage at the end of the day to a great soak in the hot tub.

tucked_away_ext Tucked Away Bay is north of Peterborough and is close to both Silent Lake Provincial Park and the Kawartha Nordic trails, where you can snow shoe and cross country ski. Your quick stop at Wild Rock on the way will ensure the whole family has snow shoes or cross country skis to help you enjoy a fantastic winter break.

Come on…..get out and enjoy the clean snow. We’ve got lots of it!

Getaway To a Cottage for the Family Day Long Weekend

In the past, once Christmas and New Year were over, there were all those weeks of winter before March Break and the chance to get out into the country and enjoy the last of the great snow. Well, this year we have the new lOntario Family Day long weekend to enjoy on the weekend of the 15th – 18th February.

What a great opportunity to rent a cottage, spend some time in the snow and get the family out of the city. We’ve got a range of cottages available for the long weekend, many with wood burning stoves and some with hot tubs. Here’s some ideas:

murphys_pool Murphy’s Retreat has an indoor swimming pool, hot tub and private toboggan run

Guests who stayed here at New Year absolutely loved it. The kids got to swim non-stop and when they weren’t in the pool they were up and down the toboggan run. One of the aspects that made the stay so enjoyable was having so much space for the two families to spread out and chill out. At just over an hour from Ottawa this is a terrific choice for anyone wanting to visit the nations capital and enjoy Winterlude.

Twin Lakes Cottage – is close to many cross country ski trails at Arrowhead Provincial Park
My sister used to own this lovely cottage so I have stayed there many times. It is a real treat in winter, not only do the hot tub and wood stove make it a great destination, but the proximity of so many winter activities from snow tubing at Rock Ridge Park to downhill skiing at Hidden Valley give the choice of so many things to do.

robins_winterext_2 Robin’s Point is a great cottage near to Mount St Louis Moonstone and Hardwood Hills for skiing. The access to two ski hills and lots of cross country trails make this is a popular choice for winter rentals. Of course the added bonus is that it’s only an hour and a half from the city. The cottage itself is welcoming, warm and very comfortable. Just what you need after a long day on the slopes or trails.

osprey_ext_winter2 Osprey Cottage is another with a hot tub and is just a great place for chilling out. Hidden away 4 kilometres down a cottage road, this cottage is the perfect peaceful venue. It’s rare to see anyone else as there are only one or two winterised cottages down this lane so bring your cross country skis and snow shoes to enjoy the tranquility. And since this is another wonderful property with a hot tub and wood stove, warming up at the end of the day is easy too.

cherry_hollow_ext_snow3 Cherry Hollow is in the heart of snowmobile country
We are often asked about skating on the lakes and have to tell people that unless the cottage owner has worked at creating a skating area it is unlikely as the frozen ice will be covered with a substantial amount of snow. Well, the owners of Cherry Hollow have that sought after skating rink, and will be keeping it open as much as they can this winter. Bear in mind that after a heavy snowfall, it takes some time to get the rink area cleared again. And that is only one of the many attractions of this spectacular cottage. As one of last summer’s renters said, “You have to see this place to believe it. The photos on the web site just don’t prepare you for the shock of opening the door and realising you have rented paradise!”

For more cottages to rent for the Ontario Family Day weekend, check our February availability calendar and I’ll be posting more tomorrow.

Winter Fun in the Kawartha Region

Snowshoes

The Kawarthas or Kawartha Lakes region of Ontario is located one to two hours by car  (depending where in the region you are travelling) North-East of Toronto, and is considered part of Central-East Ontario. This is one of Ontario’s prime cottage and vacation areas, encompassing the County  of Peterborough and the City of Kawartha Lakes (formerly Victoria County) and is encircled by Durham region and Haliburton, Northumberland and Prince Edward Counties.

The only ski hills of note are in Durham region which is not technically in the Kawartha’s but if you are vacationing in the Lindsay, Beaverton, Scugog or Pigeon Lake areas they are easily accessible. Devil’s Elbow, Lakeridge, Skyloft & Dagmar all have snowmaking equipment so skiing can start in December. Check the sites for opening hours.

Finding a comprehensive list of cross country ski areas, or places for snowshoeing has been a bit of a challenge. There are groomed trails at Devil’s Elbow and Dagmar, and to the east of the region near Apsley, the Kawartha Nordic Ski Area in Apsley has a wealth of groomed trails. Just to the west of Norland in the north west of the City of Kawartha Lakes, the Norland Cross Country Ski and Recreation Park is home to a number of trails as well, although I haven’t been able to find a site dedicated to it, you can contact them on 1 705 454-9518 for more information.

Trails for Health list a large number of trails open for cross country skiing and hiking.

I’ve been doing a bit of foot stamping as I search for winter activities in the Kawarthas. I know there’s lots going on, but there’s not much on the web pulling it all together. Come on Kawartha Tourism – this is something you should be doing.

Winter Adventures in Muskoka

Cross Country Skier

The great advantage of Muskoka is the easy access, with Hwy 400 and Hwy 11 delivering you to the region in a little over an hour. In winter there won’t be the hordes of traffic heading up there every Friday night although do expect it to be busy, given its popularity for winter activities. You should also expect and respect the conditions you’ll find!

When we used to fly in from UK in the winter, I always loved the ‘instant winter’aspect of driving north. We’d arrive, often to find some snow around theairport, but nothing spectacular, and start heading up the ‘400. By Barrie, winter was definitely in progress and once we got to Bracebridge, we reached the snowy wonderland we had come for. Lake effect snow can bring massive amounts of the white stuff to the area when the city has just a few centimeters, so if you are planning a trip, make sure you are well prepared.

Once you get there, a wealth of winter fun awaits! If you have your own snowmobile, thousands of miles of OFSC trails are open to you and if not, you can rent one from Muskoka Motion .They can provide you with machine, helmet, gloves, clothing – in short, everything you need for a day out on the trails. And if you need a guide, then give them some advanced notice and they have those too.

Downhill skiers will love Hidden Valley. Located to the east of Huntsville off Hwy 60, there’s plenty of runs for all abilities, ski school for budding skiers and snowboarders, and enough lifts to get you up to the runs with little delay. After a day’s skiing, head off to Rock Ridge for an evening of floodlit tubing. I just love this. Sit on a huge rubber tube, get towed to the top of the hill, then the kind attendant will push you off the top and give you a spin as well. This is such a rush – go with a bunch of friends and hurtle down with three or four tubes together. There’s a licensed restaurant too so you can take a break amidst all the fun for a burger and a beer.

Cross country enthusiasts can get there fill of some easy to difficult trails at Arrowhead Provincial Park. Cross country ski, and snowshoe rental is available there too. If you have never done cross country before, qualified instructors with Ski for Life will have you skimming the trails in no time. Visit the site for a list of workshops held on Sundays throughout the winter in Gravenhurst and Huntsville.

How about some dog sledding. Mushing across a frozen lake and through forest trails. Sounds cool doesn’t it? Call of the Wild has half day and full day trips to experience this unique winter activity north of Huntsville.

We have rental cottages available in winter throughout the Muskoka and Almaguin Highlands region. Take a look at the website and book an adventure weekend. The snow will be with us soon, so plan on getting active this winter.

Winter Activities in the Haliburton Highlands

Lets kick off with my favourite area. When we first came out to Ontario from UK, we bought a cottage on a tiny lake in the Haliburton Highlands, and it was there we experienced our first real Ontario winter. I’ll never forget the quirks of the weather at Christmas, that gave a day of thaw and rain, followed by a trip back into the deep freeze. The lake that had been covered with snow was revealed as the biggest skating rink I have ever seen. We skated non-stop that day, along with other delighted cottage residents – a never to be forgotten experience.

This beautiful area has a lot to offer winter visitors. For starters it has a great downhill ski area at Sir Sam’s on Eagle Lake. Granted this is a ski hill, not a mountain, but it is great for a half day out, and will serve the beginner to moderate skier really well.

There’s a wealth of cross country trails in the Haliburton Highlands with over 100 kilometres of groomed trails maintained by Haliburton Nordic Trails. A day pass will allow you to ski at Glebe Park in Haliburton, Moosewoods, the Leslie Frost Centre trails, Camp Wanakita, and the Resort Trails (including Wigamog, Pinestone and Willow Beach).

The Trails and Tours Network is a really comprehensive site covering all winter activities across Haliburton. It includes all trails, dog sledding, and a great list of tobogganing hills. And don’t forget the luge at the Redstone River Luge Club.

And for snowmobilers, the region is blessed with a great network of  OFSCtrails, and the The Haliburton Forest was rated by “Supertrax”  as one of the top-10 snowmobiling destinations in North America. Daily snowmobile rental is available here too. And for those who like to be shown the way, try a guided snowmobile safari. Highland Wilderness Tours offer the complete package – sled, all equipment and clothing, and a guide  – for your supreme snowy day out.

And last but not least….you’ll need a cottage to stay in while you enjoy these great activities, and you’ll find those at CottageLINK Rental Management. Visit the site and take a look at our range of fully winterized cottages.

I’d love to hear about your winter experiences, what you like to do, and where your favourite place is, so just leave me a comment.
